Alma Miller Yancey

January 28, 2016

Alma Miller (Lucas) Yancey, 94, of Somerset, passed away peacefully in her home on January 28, 2016. Born August 11, 1921 in Washington DC, she is the daughter of Rodney and Juanita (Miller) Lucas. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward S. Yancey Jr. siblings Delores Oliver, Emmett Lucas and Rodney Lucas and great great granddaughter Delilah Jean Conn. She is survived by her brother Jules Lucas of Washington DC and her three children, Patricia Mason of Silver Spring MD, Ron Yancey (Vicki) of Somerset, and Jules Yancey (Melissa) of Pittsburgh. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Sean Mason (Veronika) Jessica Refner (Ed), Kyle Yancey (Aliya), Ashley Ohler (Randy), Katlyn Weyant (Cory). Six great grandchildren, Samantha Hostetler, Logan Refner, Ian Mason, Caleb Ohler, Natalee Ohler, Layne Weyant and one great great grandchild, Ariel Conn, and her cat Jordon. Beyond her immediate family, Mrs. Yancey had many extended sons and daughters in which she had a hand in raising during her lifetime. Her home was always an open door and welcoming for anyone who may have needed a short or long stay if there was an extra bedroom available. She worked alongside her husband and the Yancey brothers running the family business, Somerset County Laundry in the 1960’s. After her husband passed away, she went to school and studied to become a psychiatric aide at the Somerset State Hospital from which she retired in 1982. She managed to successfully provide for her children to all attend college. Mrs. Yancey was always involved in the community supporting her children and grandchildren in Cub and Boy Scouts, Little League, Senior League, gymnastics, and other activities. It can be said that she never missed a game, never fell short of clipping and saving a newspaper article about her family. In her senior years, Mrs. Yancey made a number of special friends who saw her through the last chapter. Special thanks and recognition to the care givers and providers that supported her: Velma Igou, Lisa June, Jane Baker, Melissa Klejlka, Deb Barndt, Pat Egly, Keri Fabian, Mike and the staff at the Medicine Shoppe and Dr. Rita Camacho and her staff. Very extra special thanks to Chris Eyth and Theresa Niemiec who loved and cared for her as if she were their own. Friends received 2-4 pm and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home Somerset, , where services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday. All are welcome. Interment Husband Cemetery. Mrs Yancey loved her many pets. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you consider contribution to the Somerset County Humane Society, P.O. Box 182, Somerset PA 15501 or your favorite charity. www.haugerzeigler.com
