Forrest Eugene Walker, 93, Somerset, died April 9, 2017, in Somerset. Born January 7, 1924, in Belltown, Somerset Co., son of Frank Roy and Lucy Rebecca (Ankeny) Walker. Preceded in death by parents, first wife, Peggy (Scott) Walker; and sisters, Jean Barron and Norma Fritz. Survived by wife, Mary Lou (Mullen) Walker; children, Keith Walker and wife, Katherine, Bakersville; Susan Ann Kelly and husband, Kevin, Bakersville; LeeAnn Rininger, and husband, Scott, Stoystown; Amy Lynn Walker-Ream and husband, Robert, Somerset; and Mark Walker and wife, Amy (Wood), Superior, Colo. Also survived by grandchildren, Jennifer, Clinton, Jeffrey, Sarah and Jason Walker; Luke, Alex, Ryan and Cole Ream; Nathan and Nicole Rininger; and Ian and Fiona Walker; 5 great-grandchildren; and sister, Pauline Baker, Somerset. Forrest was a 1941 graduate of Somerset High School, 1948 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars. He also served in the Pennsylvania National Guard for 19 years. He was employed as the Director of Coal Analysis for the US Department of Mines and for Geochemical Testing. He was a lay pastor for nearly 20 years at New Hope Community Church. He was a Boy Scout leader along with serving on additional Boy Scouting advisory groups. He was also a member of American Society for Testing & Materials and served on its committees. Was past Chairman for ASTM Committee D-5. He received numerous awards for his work throughout his career. Forrest introduced and developed the concept of standard samples for the ASTM standard of coal grindability. He also assisted in developing specifications for computerizing the first coal analysis laboratory in the United States. He was the co-author of several reports regarding Tipple and Delivered Samples, Sulfur in U.S. Coals and Analysis and Testing Coal and Coke. Member of Somerset VFW Post #554. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service at Noon Saturday at Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Somerset, with Rev. Bruce Metz officiating.
