Kathy Baker Trent, 65, Somerset, died peacefully on April 25, 2017, at Somerset Hospice House after a courageous 8 year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born May 19, 1951, in Somerset, daughter of the late Norbert C. and Maxine (Lape) Baker. She is survived by her husband, Blaine Trent; step-daughter, Rebecca Trent and husband, Paul Lekas, Bethesda, MD.; step-son, Bradley Trent of Auburn, Mass.; step-grandchildren, Elio and Felix Lekas and Christian Trent; sister, Mary Ann Baker Fulks and husband, Barry, Pittsburgh; nephew, Johann Fulks and wife Ceri, Lucerne, Switzerland; great-nephew, Aaron Fulks and great-niece, Ella Fulks; and nephew, Andreas Fulks, Portland, OR.

Kathy was a 1969 graduate of Somerset Area High School. She was a bagpiper with her beloved Tam O’ Shanters and traveled nationally and internationally to perform with the group. Kathy attended Radford University in Virginia and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art and K-12 education. After college, she worked for the Virginia Department of Energy as an executive responsible for energy education and at one point was responsible for fuel allocations for a large portion of Virginia during the 1979 Energy Crisis. After returning to Somerset in 1988, Kathy began substitute teaching in the Somerset School District. She was also a public relations consultant and was proud of her efforts working with developers, politicians and construction firms to bring the first Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution to Somerset. She was very proud to be a part of that project that brought many jobs to Somerset County. Kathy was hired as a full- time Art teacher in the Somerset Junior High School and she was committed to modernizing the curriculum by incorporating computer graphics and design. She wrote many grants to obtain computers and audio visual equipment for the school. She loved her fellow teachers and she did her absolute best to develop the talents of her students and she took great pride in their accomplishments. Kathy was a talented artist and creating pottery and jewelry were by far her favorite projects. She traveled to numerous foreign countries to experience their art cultures and brought those experiences to her classroom. Kathy was an avid skier and race walker and loved Zumba, yoga classes and working out at Precision Fitness. Above all, she was a dedicated wife, daughter, sister, step-mother, aunt and friend. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. In the end, she left this world as she entered it: an innocent, gentle soul, totally dependent on the love and kindness of others for her every need. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Somerset, and again from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Geiger Church of the Brethren, Revs. John and Linda Stoner officiating.
