Donald William Svonavec, 88, of Listie, died June 27, 2019 at Somerset Hospice House. Born June 15, 1931 in Somerset, he is the son of Steven and Helen (Bator) Svonavec. Preceded in death by his parents, son Gregory A. Svonavec Sr., granddaughter, Destiny Rose Svonavec, brother Steven Svonavec, and sisters: Elizabeth Aust, Margaret Knapp, Dorothy Steinkirchner, Helen Zborovancik, Agnes Hay, and Jane Van Aller. Survived by his wife the former Jane A. Taylor to whom he was married 62 years, children: Theresa Woy and husband David, Angela G. Svonavec and husband John Kuhn, and Timothy J. Svonavec married to the former Beth Bulow all of Somerset, Judith Walker and husband Ron of Mechanicsburg, daughter-in-law Rita Svonavec of Beckley WV, grandchildren: Jenna Wintersteen, and Gregory Svonavec of Somerset, Sarah Hillegas of Indiana, Rachel Svonavec of Pittsburgh, Eli Svonavec of Somerset, Samantha Giuliano of Mechanicsburg, and James Donald Onstead of York, great-grandchildren: Tenley, Anniston, Molly, Lycan and Lucian who is on the way; also survived by brothers: Joseph J. Svonavec and wife Grace of Rockwood, and James Svonavec and wife Sally of Somerset. Don was a 1949 graduate of Somerset Township High School, he was co-owner and operator with his brother of D&J Coal Company, and later worked as a federal mine inspector until his retirement. Don was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Knight's of Columbus, past president of Joseph A. Holmes Mine Assn., and a member of the Old Timer's Baseball Association where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005. A vigil for the deceased will be conducted at 1:45 p.m. Sunday following by visitation from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Somerset, a funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Father Angelo Patty Celebrant.
