Jewel Powis Shumaker

Jewel Powis Shumaker, 97, of Somerset Twp. passed away June 1, 2018 at Somerset Hospice House.  Born February 13, 1921 in Altoona, she is the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Rutherford) Powis.  Preceded in death by her parents, and husband Willard J. Shumaker who died March 6, 1996.  Her husband know as "Pete" Shumaker, was principal owner of S&A Chevrolet Company, and was a prominent automobile dealer in Somerset County.  Jewel graduated from Altoona High School; worked with the Penn Harris Hotel and the Comptroller's Office in Harrisburg, and then with the Auditor General's Department in Harrisburg.  She moved to Somerset when she married "Pete" Shumaker.  She was active at the Somerset Hospital where she volunteered as a dedicated worker at the snack bar when it first opened and at the gift shop.  She was very active as a volunteer in patient services and was frequently referred to as "Guardian Angel" of the patients.  Jewel was a member and past president of Somerset Welfare League and an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.  Friends received 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church Chapel, Somerset, where a service will follow at 2 p.m. with Reverend Linda McElroy Thomas officiating.  Interment Somerset County Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Somerset Hospital or Trinity Lutheran Church.  Arrangements by the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Somerset. www.haugerzeigler.com
