Reverend Dr. Arthur John Gotjen, 88, of Somerset, died August 22, 2024 at his home. Born June 10, 1936 in Ellwood City, he is the son of Christopher W. and Elizabeth (Walker) Gotjen. Preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen Gotjen, brothers Charles, Merle, Floyd, and Paul Gotjen, and son-in-law John Thorn. Survived by his wife the former Marlene J. Chapman to whom he was married 67 years, children Mark K. Gotjen and wife Lynne, Eric S. Gotjen and wife Dawn, Lana S. Thorn, Elizabeth A. Gotjen and husband Todd Crawford, and Deidre L. Gotjen and husband Eric Spingler, grandchildren Christopher Thorn, Audra, Chynna, and Caleb Gotjen. Art was a graduate of Lincoln High School, in Ellwood City, received his BS from West Virginia Wesleyan, Master Div. from Methodist Theological School in Ohio, MS from California University, and his doctorate from Wesley Theological Seminary. He was a US Coast Guard Veteran receiving the rank of 1st Class Machinist Mate, and the Good Conduct Medal. He worked as a sweeper salesman, a machinist for a valve company, and pastorate for West Virginia Conference, Confluence United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church, he was a chaplain from Somerset Community Hospital, and was a professor of ethics classes from Methodist Theological School in Ohio, and Garrett Community College. Art was a past member of Confluence Lions Club, Yough Housing Inc. where he was secretary/manager, president/chairman of Turkeyfoot School Board, past board member and president of Habitat for Humanity, Somerset Hospital Board, Supervisory Committee for Keystone U.M. Credit Union, served on the board and as chairman and treasurer for Next Step Center, volunteered for RSVP, and served on numerous board and agencies within the West PA Annual Conference of United Methodist Church. He enjoyed boat building, biology and science, hiking, skiing, biking and reading. Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Grace United Methodist Church Somerset, and from 10-11 a.m. Monday where a service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. with Reverend Eric Raygor officiating.
