Bernard Jay Grundy Obituary
Bernard "Bernie" Jay Grundy passed away peacefully at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, on April 16, 2026, after a brief battle with significant heart disease. Bernie is the son of Bernard N. Grundy and Betty J. (Kaufman) Grundy both of whom preceded him in passing. His brother, Terry Grundy also preceded him. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Linda D. (Williams) Grundy; son Kenneth J. Grundy, his wife Katherine D. (Ubik) Grundy; daughter Kristine D. (Grundy) Alford, her husband Jon E. Alford. Grandchildren: Benjamin E. Alford; Rebecca D. (Grundy) Hough, her husband Tyler M. Hough; J. Bradley Alford; Elizabeth D. Grundy; and Brian J. Alford. Great Grandchildren: Violet B. Alford-Wallace; Jalen B. Alford; and Caroline D. Hough. Bernie was born on October 22, 1942, in Somerset, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Shade Township High School in 1960 and was accepted to the University of Pittsburgh but decided to enlist in the United States Air Force with his parents' permission since he had not yet turned 18. After completing boot camp, he trained as an airplane radio technician and later was stationed in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1964 and moved to Maryland, where his parents were living at the time. He enrolled in the University of Maryland and became a lifelong Terp fan. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in economics he began a nearly 30-year career with the Defense Intelligence Agency. Being extremely proud to serve as a Federal Government employee, he worked extremely hard throughout his career. His hard work and dedication earned him numerous awards, honors and promotions, including the DIA Meritorious Civilian Service Medal (1976), the CIA/OSWR Outstanding Service Award (1994), the DIA Director's Award for Exceptional Civilian Service (1997) and the Defense Intelligence Director's Award (1997). In his many years of retirement from the Federal Government, Bernie worked part time at Fine Wine and spent many years bartending at Smokey Glen Farm. He particularly enjoyed eating a hot dog while he patrolled the event sites and spending time talking to the other staff members. He also spent many hours as a childcare provider for his "sick" (not really) grandkids who often left school early. He had many hobbies over the years including hunting, fishing, golfing, and running. For many seasons he and Linda attended Terp football and basketball games with friends and traveled to many ACC away games. In later life he really enjoyed Marland lacrosse. As a proud veteran and lifetime member of the VFW, he served in numerous capacities at his lodge. Bernie dedicated his life to God and his country. Duty and honor were always his driving force. He took great pride in caring for his devoted wife, Linda, a responsibility he fulfilled with unwavering commitment. His big—though ultimately fragile—heart was full of love for his family, who will miss him deeply. The family will be having a private ceremony at a later date. Interment Walker Cemtery (Shanksville)
