Betty Jane James, 84, of Somerset, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2023 in Arlington, Virginia surrounded by members of her family. Born on August 17, 1938 in Hancock, New York. She is the daughter of Austin Cecil and Edith Mae (Wise) Tasker. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother James Robert Tasker, and her sister Mildred Elizabeth (Tasker) Trent. She is survived by her four daughters: Kate Eakman (Scott) of Oregon, Barb Mull (Bill) of Arizona, Missy Hancher (Geoffrey) of Eighty Four, and Jeaneen Arthur (Avi) of Virginia; grandchildren Nathaniel James Parker, Jeremy Eakman (Jenn), Ashley Marie Arthur, Ana Arthur, Sasha Haggerty (Roger), Grant Hancher, Alexander Hancher, and Austin Gabriel Arthur; great-grandchildren Noah Eakman and Freyja Haggerty; her brother William Cecil (Cora Mae) Tasker of Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews. Betty was a graduate of Somerset High School. She worked at J.J. Newberry's in Somerset and later was the manager of Art & Things in McMurray, PA before returning to Somerset to manage the Christian Bookstore where she worked until her retirement. Betty was a member of the Somerset Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and loved to travel, read, play board games and cook. Friends received 1:30-2:00 p.m. Saturday February 4, 2023 at the Somerset Church of Christ, Somerset, where a service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. with James Hinton officiating. Interment Somerset County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Somerset Church of Christ 310 S. Kimberly Ave. Somerset, PA 15501.
