Evelyn Fay Sowers Wright Bender

Evelyn Fay Sowers Wright Bender (age 86) of Diamond Springs, CA formerly of Friedens, PA died suddenly at her home on June 14, 2023. Born in Johnstown, PA on January 8,1937, Evelyn was the daughter of Vera Miles and Herbert Sowers. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her only sibling, sister Joyce Sowers Berkey; her first husband James W. Wright MD; her second husband George B. Bender; her third husband Shee Y. (James) Chin; her son-in-law John Flores; and her stepdaughter Margaret (Bunny) Bender Barta. She is survived by her four children: Laura Wright (Terry) Tawney, Debra Wright (Shaun) Akin, John W. (Kenda) Wright, and Jennifer Wright Flores; 16 grandchildren: Heather, Laura, Olivia, Lily, Anna-Claire, Sarita, Daniel, Matthew, Abigail, Jonathan, Lindsey, Anna, April, Andrew, Lorrie, and Travis; and seven great grandchildren: James, Demian, Meadow, Cedar, Liam, Ben, and Lucy. Evelyn graduated from Somerset Area Senior High School in 1954 then went on to attend Windber Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1957 with her RN degree. She worked in many different positions in healthcare as a Registered Nurse for 34 years and retired in 1991 from the Somerset State Hospital. She lived in her home on Stouffer Hill Road in Friedens, PA for 46 years until 2013 when she moved to California to be closer to two of her daughters. Evelyn was a faithful Christian and loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and new people. She was a thoughtful and generous woman who delighted in sharing her financial blessings by donating to Christian charities and individuals as the Spirit of the Lord led her. She enjoyed travel and oil painting, was an avid reader, and spent many hours in prayer and Bible study. Evelyn loved ducks and babies. She often said that she had her dream job when she worked in the Preemie Nursery at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA because she got to hold and care for the babies all day. Per Evelyn's wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral. She will be buried in Husband Cemetery in Somerset, PA next to her parents and James Wright MD, the father of her children. A Celebration of Life Service will be planned at her home church, Westside Church, Placerville, CA at a later date. Final arrangements are being made jointly by Green Valley Mortuary of Rescue, CA and Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Somerset, PA.
