Gilbert Pickett 85, died at home in Sterling, VA on Saturday, September 16, 2023. He was born in Somerset, Pennsylvania on February 13, 1938, to James and Hattie (Davis) Pickett. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother James Pickett and sisters Bertha Davis Anderson, Dorothy Ann Pickett. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Pope. His son James G. Pickett, Sterling, VA and daughters Roberta Pickett, Sterling, VA; Debra Pickett Wilburn, Romeoville, IL and three granddaughters Summer Wilburn, Joliet, IL; Sierra Wilburn, Schaumburg, IL and Skyler Wilburn, Romeoville, IL and a sister Rosetta Pickett Yancey, Somerset, PA. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Gilbert graduated in 1957 from Somerset High School, Somerset, PA. From 1960 to 1963 he served in the Army as an airplane mechanic based primary in Italy. After being discharged from the Army he attended Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA). While at PIA he worked part time as a cook. Upon graduation from PIA he was hired by United Airlines as their first black AMP mechanic and worked at Regan National, Washington, DC then Chicago O'Hare in Chicago, IL. He retired from Dulles Airport, Dulles, VA. During retirement he worked for Hertz as a transporter. He loved to garden, grow grapes for wine making and kept a beautiful yard with flowers. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and bingo. Gilbert was great at grilling and cooking. He will be missed by all. RIP On Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 10 am a Memorial Service will be held at Christian Fellowship Church, 44505 Atwater Dr, Ashburn, VA 20147, 703-729-3900 with Pastor Fred Clark officiating. On Saturday, October 21, 2023, a Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 am with visitation from 10:00 to 11:30 am at Hauger- Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 494 W Main St, Somerset, PA 15501, 814-445- 5698. Pastor Brent Williams, Somerset First Christian Church, officiating. Memorial Contributions can be made in Gilbert's name to the Alzheimer's Association. Interment at Husband Cemetery.
