James Thomas Doherty

James Thomas Doherty, 80, of Virginia Beach, VA, died July 15, 2019 at his home. Born December 21, 1938 in Somerset, he is the son of Patrick Joseph and Mary Catherine (Myers) Doherty. Preceded in death by his parents, brother John Doherty, and sisters: Sara Ann Doherty, Patricia J. Doherty, Rosemary Jordan, and Martha Dowd. Survived by his loving wife the former Elizabeth D'Italia to whom he was married 56 years. James leaves to cherish his memory 3 children: Deborah Little and husband Danny of Virginia Beach, VA, Kevin M. Doherty and wife Mary Catherine of Olmsted Township, OH, and Brian C. Doherty and wife Patricia of Oak Park, IL, 10 grandchildren: Justin, Ashley, Danielle, Sarah, Megan, Michael, Danny, Cathy, Siobhan, and Ciara; brother Charles Doherty and wife Pat of Canoga Park, CA, and sister Teresa Doherty of Bethesda, MD. James "Doc" was a 1956 graduate of Somerset High School, a 1960 graduate of Notre Dame, and a 1962 graduate of Cornell where he received his masters degree. He worked until his retirement as a hospital administrator for Trafalgar Hospital in New York City, and later for West Penn Hospital In Pittsburgh, he was vice president of the American Hospital Association, and the Michigan Hospital Association. Friends received 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Somerset, a funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Somerset, with Father Angelo Patti Celebrant.
