James Elwood Swartz Sr., 97, of Davidsville, formerly of Somerset, died October 10, 2023 at Laurel View Village. Born October 19, 1925 in Boswell, he is the son of Henry Elwood and Myrtle Irene (Spangler) Swartz. Preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert Swartz, sister Mary Ellen Miller, and granddaughter Olivia Ann Swartz. Survived by his wife the former Lois Jean Mogart, and sons: James E. Swartz II and partner Martha Mignogna, and his sons, Christopher Swartz, and David Leslie, also son Robert H. Swartz and his daughter Lexie and son Dylan, and son John D. Swartz and wife Aimee, their daughter Bailey, 4 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. James was a 1944 graduate of JBJ High School. He served two years in WWII in the European Theatre, "Battle of the Bulge" in Belgium three campaigns, "Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe," with the 78 Infantry Division. James retired from Pennsylvania Electric Company with 38 years of service as the Somerset District Engineering Supervisor. Member of Somerset Church of the Brethren having served as a Sunday School Superintendent, usher, and deacon for many years. He was a member of Laurel Hill Lions Club since March 1959 where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow, life member of Samuel Crouse Post 181, American Legion, life member of the Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department, and a 50 year member of Somerset Masonic Lodge 358 F&AM, 32nd Degree. James was a Red Cross blood donor with over 19 gallons donated, founding member of WWII Memorial, WWI Museum and Flight 93 Memorial, and was a member of the Penelec Retirees Club. Friends received 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Somerset, where a service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Wes Yoder officiating. Interment Somerset County Memorial Park. A Masonic service will be conducted at 10 a.m Saturday. Military rites accorded by the Somerset County Honor Guard.
