Jerry "Buck" D. DeWitt, 71, passed away peacefully at home with his family after many years of illness on Thursday, June 5, 2025. Born in Somerset to Robert C. and Helen Lois (Hostetler) DeWitt, Buck was the eldest of seven children. Buck was preceded in death by his two brothers; Robert R. and Barry J DeWitt and nephew Justin S. Kinneer. Buck is survived by his wife of 52 years, Arlene (Shawley) DeWitt, daughters; Jennifer (Robert) Barkman, and Melissa (Chad) Shultz. Buck was the proud grandpa of four amazing grandchildren: Jake and Ben Barkman and Diem and Mila Shultz. Buck leaves behind his fur babies: Mandy, Barley and Josie. Buck is survived by his siblings: Ruth "Sis" (Don) Ash, Rick (Kandi) DeWitt, Deb (Bart) Kinneer, Russ (Brenda) DeWitt, sister-in-law; Margaret DeWitt, brother-in-law; Tom Shawley (Kathi Columbus). Buck was uncle to 17 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. Buck graduated from Somerset Area Senior High School Class of '72. He was a member of Samuel's Lutheran Church, past member of Bakersville VFD, Trent Rod and Gun Club and Laurel Hill Sportsman Association. Buck was a building contractor and began his work after graduation with his father's business; "Robert C. DeWitt Contracting" and in 1995 began his own contracting business; "Buck DeWitt Construction". He designed, hand drew and built many residential homes and businesses in the local area, as well as did remodeling, additions, decks, garages, sheds, etc. In Buck's healthier years he loved skiing (water and downhill as well as cross-country), fishing, hunting, foraging for mushrooms and ramps, bowling and watching car racing as well as his brief participation in "Dwarf Car" racing at Jennerstown. Buck was well known for his great story telling ability and entertaining many. He especially enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada, Michigan and Erie with dear friends and family. Buck was a 'Big-hearted" man who gave even when he did without. Buck loved his family very much and he will be greatly missed as husband, father and grandpa, as well as, family and friends. We wish to extend a very-special "Thank You" to the staff from Via Quest Hospice who cared for and treated Buck with love and compassion. Family and friends will be received at Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Somerset, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 from 11:00 - 2:00 and 5:00 - 7:00 where a service will immediately follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Josh Spangler officiating, . Interment Somerset County Memorial Park.
