Joseph John Svonavec Sr., 94 of Rockwood, died October 4, 2022 at his home. Born October 27, 1927 in Listie, he is the son of Steven and Helen (Bator) Svonavec. Preceded in death by his parents, brothers Steven and Donald Svonavec, and sisters: Elizabeth Aust, Margaret Knapp, Dorothy Steinkirchner, Helen Zborovancik, Agnes Hay, and Jane Van Aller, and grandchildren; Lucas, Valerie, and Michael Tad Svonavec. Survived by his wife the former Grace I. Shockey to whom he was married 71 years, sons: Joseph Svonavec Jr. and wife Rosemary, David Svonavec and wife Elizabeth Louise "Betty Lou" all of Rockwood, Anthony Svonavec and wife Diana of Somerset, Michael Svonavec of the Villages, FL, James Svonavec and wife Lynn of Harrisonburg, VA, John Svonavec and wife Cindy of Somerset, Patrick Svonavec and wife Joy of Hidden Valley, and Vincent Svonavec and wife Donna of Rockwood, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and brother John "Jim" Svonavec of Somerset. Joseph was a US Navy Veteran of WWII, he worked until his retirement as owner/operator of Svonavec Coal Co., he also had a love of farming, and was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Joseph was loved by all who knew him, he was generous and kind. He was a businessman, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to all. Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Somerset, a funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Somerset, with Father Angelo Patti Celebrant.
