Joseph Vergona, 80, of Somerset died September 28, 2023 at UPMC Somerset Hospital, after a battle with myeloma and amyloidosis. He was born February 28, 1943 in Braddock, PA, the son of the late Angelo and Jennie (Cerra) Vergona. He is survived by his wife the former Pamela Crowe to whom he was married 57 years, and two sons, John J. Vergona of Easton, PA, and Michael J. Vergona (Fawn) of Centerville, PA, three grandchildren, Everett, Veda, and Madison, two brothers, Sam Vergona (Marian) of Venice, FL, and Anthony Vergona (Judy) of Fox Chapel, PA, two sisters, Rosalie Bollman of North Huntington, PA, and Rachel Colyer of Swissvale, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was a graduate of Swissvale High School and California State University. He did additional studies at WVU, Duquesne University and received a Doctorate from Nova Southeastern University. He worked as an elementary teacher in the Pittsburgh area then as elementary principal and Director of Elementary Education for the Union City School District retiring in 2002. He also worked as an adjunct professor for Gannon University for 14 years teaching graduate level courses retiring in 2015. When living in Erie County, Joe was actively involved in community activities. At Saint Teresa's Catholic Church he served as an usher, was on the financial committee, and acted as CCD Director for a short time. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Lions Club, serving as president for one year, and was on the Board of Incorporators of the Union City Hospital. Here in Somerset he was a volunteer with the Prison Ministry until he became ill. Friends received 9-11 a.m Tuesday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Somerset, a funeral mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Somerset, with Father Angelo Patti Celebrant.
