Our dear mother, Mary Linda Kelly Gleysteen, passed away February 20, 2022 in Scarborough, Maine, at age 87 after a brief illness. She was born to Paul and Myrtle Kelly in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and always had a great fondness for Pittsburgh and western PA. She and her husband, Dirk Marshall, who preceded her in death in 2019, raised their three children, Ann (Smith), Dirk, and Eric in Rockville, MD, and after Dirk retired, they moved to Hidden Valley, PA. There they enjoyed many happy years of skiing, walking in the mountains with a succession of Shelties, worshipping at their Episcopal Church, having family come visit, and cheering the Steelers on to many victories. They later moved to Portland, ME, to continue enjoying northern winters, four seasons, and their son Eric and his family.
Linda's older brother Tom departed this life before her, and Linda leaves behind her 'little sister' Hannah and 'little brother' Paul, as she thought of them. Her children celebrate her life, as do her seven adoring grandchildren, her one darling great-grandson, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
We cannot think of anything our mother did not like. She had enthusiasm for everything, it seemed - Singing, playing the piano, ukulele, square dancing, birdwatching, swimming in the ocean, sewing and quilting, playing bridge, cooking Swedish meals, keeping a tidy, pretty home, her Swedish and Irish heritage, cocktail time with Dirk, the Tamburitzans, being a Girl Scout leader, going on field trips with her kids, one drop of Tabasco sauce, snow, camping, liverwurst… The list is truly endless! She was an enthusiast of life itself and gifted this precious quality to her children and all those who spent any time with her.
Linda's service will be held at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home in Somerset, PA, on Saturday, March 19, 2022, where guests will be received at 3:00pm for a 4:00pm service. In lieu of flowers, Linda would have loved donations to the AAUW, Hood College, or any service organization that honors those less fortunate, or the planet she loved.
