Murray D. Thompson, Ph.D., a decorated veteran, distinguished psychologist, respected educator, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully in Hidden Valley, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a legacy of service, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others.

Born with a deep sense of duty and integrity, Murray proudly served his country as a paratrooper in the United States Army, completing two tours of duty in Vietnam. His courageous service earned him numerous military commendations and the enduring respect of his fellow soldiers.

Following his military service, Murray pursued higher education with the same determination that defined every aspect of his life. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Arts degree, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. His professional career was distinguished by academic excellence and a lifelong commitment to understanding and improving the lives of others.

Murray served as a professor and researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, where he shared his knowledge and mentored future professionals. He maintained a successful clinical psychology practice and spent 27 years consulting with industry, applying psychological principles to strengthen leadership and improve organizational effectiveness. Later in his career, he served for more than 15 years as a Supervising Licensed Psychologist with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, where his expertise, professionalism, and compassion positively impacted countless colleagues and individuals in his care.

Above all else, Murray treasured his family. He was the beloved husband of Linda Thompson, whose love and partnership were the foundation of their life together. He was a proud and loving father to his daughter, Amanda Winnor and her husband, Todd, and his son, Jason T. Thompson and his wife, Lauren. Murray found his greatest joy in his grandchildren, Bethany Winnor, Ashley Winnor, Jonny Thompson, and Charlotte Thompson. To them, he was far more than a grandfather—he was a storyteller, mentor, role model, and a steadfast source of wisdom, encouragement, and unconditional love. He also shared an extraordinary lifelong bond with his twin brother, William Thompson. Their relationship was one of deep love, unwavering support, and mutual respect, a connection that remained a constant source of strength and joy throughout their lives.

Murray will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, intellectual curiosity, quiet strength, and generous spirit. His life was a testament to service—to his country, his profession, his family, and his community. The lives he touched through his military service, professional career, and personal relationships will continue to reflect the values he lived each day.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Murray's lifelong commitment to serving those who served our country.

Family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives were touched by Murray are invited to celebrate his life on Saturday, August 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the Oakhurst Grille & Event Center, 2409 Glades Pike, Somerset, PA 15501. Following a brief service, guests are invited to stay for fellowship, light refreshments, and the opportunity to share memories as we honor Murray's extraordinary life and lasting legacy.
