Shirley Louise Scheidinger

Shirley L. Scheidinger, 92, of Somerset, PA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Somerset In Touch Hospice House. She was born in Johnstown, PA on November 11, 1929, to the late William Arthur and Dorothy Belle (Rutledge) Smith. Shirley is survived and loved by her two daughters, Donna Flickinger and husband Ronald of Somerset, PA and Barbara Hewett and husband Terry of Bolton, MA; four grandchildren: Christopher Baker and wife Kristen Dieffenbach, Wendy Horvath and husband Greg, Campbell Hewett, and Emma Hewett; three great grandchildren: Mae Knight, Ryder Baker and Mason Horvath; one foster-sister, Ida "Elyse" Fox of Sellersville, PA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Donald J. Scheidinger, brother William C. Smith, sister Joanna R. Erwin, and foster-sister Hilda Fetterman. She graduated from Greater Johnstown High School in 1947 and attended Indiana University of PA before starting her teaching career at Somerset Area School District. She met and fell in love with Don in the tenth grade and they were married on April 12, 1953. Throughout her life, Shirley devoted many hours to various volunteer organizations, most notably spending 31 years as a volunteer at the Somerset Hospital. She was an avid seamstress and made many quilts, worry bears, and knitted infant blankets and hats for the hospital. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and compassionate caregiver to all she loved. She will be dearly missed by those whose lives she touched.
