William Lowell Capps Obituary

William Lowell Capps, 71, of Irwin, formerly of Somerset, PA, passed away peacefully June 2, 2024 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. Born July 1, 1952 in Fort Wayne, IN, he was the son of the late James Herman and Mary Josephine (Cox) Capps. Survived by his wife, Carol Ann (Casteel) Capps, to whom he was married for 43 years, children Ashley Capps and James Capps both of Pittsburgh, sister Barbara Cormack of Beaverton, OR, and brother Stephen Capps and wife Marie D'Amico of San Carlos, CA, sister-in-law Kay Casteel and husband Neil Coleman of Mercersburg, PA, and brother-in-law Ben Casteel of Tallahassee, FL, and eight fantastic nieces and nephews. William was a graduate of Niskayuna High School in Schenectady, NY, and Carnegie Mellon University, with a degree in Industrial Design. He worked as an adjunct instructor at Portland Community College (PCC) and as a building designer for various companies including his own, KooserRun Construction. His work has been published in a Taunton Press Book 'Built-In Furniture' as well as 'Remodeling Magazine', and can be seen standing proudly all around western Pennsylvania and northwest Oregon. As a designer and builder, he focused on reducing the environmental impacts of construction, as evidenced by the family cabin he developed using partly recycled materials near Jones Mills nearly 40 years ago. Outside of his work, he was the most caring and understanding husband and father, and found it very important to gain perspective through new experiences in new places - even to the extent of never eating anywhere on vacation that they could at home. In the community, he fondly remembered his time as Commissioner for the Somerset AYSO chapter, as well as refereeing and coaching. As a coach, he taught players that an assist was worth more than a goal, a lesson that resonates more with time. William was an active volunteer for Parkinson's research. He participated in the Voyager Therapeutics AAV Gene Therapy Phase II Trial, a UPMC MRI mitochondrial marker study for Parkinson's, and was a panelist and advocate with the AskBio Gene Therapy team in conjunction with their AAV2-GDNF for Advanced Parkinson's Disease stem cell therapy. As a research participant, there was no limit to his dedication to the cause. At his death, as he wished, his body was donated to further Parkinson's research. William was a member of Somerset County Builders Association, PA Builders Association, National Association of Home Builders, Oregon Green Builders, American Institute of Building Design, PCC Faculty Federation and Academic Professionals (AFT Local 2277) and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Irwin. No viewing or visitation. A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the Bakersville Grove. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation https://tinyurl.com/BillMJFF , Parkinson's Foundation of Western PA https://tinyurl.com/BillPFWP , or WYEP https://wyep.org/support .
