Bill grew up in San Francisco, where he and attended Roman Catholic grammar school. His parents later moved to Los Angeles, where Bill attended high school and starred as a competitive swimmer and later began college at UCLA in 1948. When his family moved East, Bill transferred to college at Georgetown University, where he studied as a pre-medical student, received his medical degree with First Honors in Psychiatry, and - most importantly -- met his first wife, Alice Long, a nursing student.
