J. Robert Brougher

J. Robert "Bob" Brougher, 87, formerly of Somerset, died March 17, 2017 at Richland Woods Assisted Living in Johnstown, Pa.  Born December 21, 1929 in Jerome, Pa., he is the son of O. Glenn Sr. and Hilda (Brennan) Brougher.  Preceded in death by his parents, and brothers O. Glenn Jr. and Ronald C. Brougher.  Survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, the former Lois Lape, daughter Susan B. Centi and husband John of Somerset, grandchildren Claire Guzman and husband Luis of Imperial, Pa., Brennan John and Gordon Robert Centi, both of Pittsburgh, Pa., great-grandson Luis Robert Guzman, and extended members of the Lape and Brougher families whom he also cherished.  Bob is a 1947 graduate of Jenner-Boswell Joint High School. He received his B.S. in Industrial Arts Education from California State Teachers College, and his M. Ed. from the Pennsylvania State University.  Bob is a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and trained troops as a sergeant in Fort Sill, Ok.
     Bob was an Industrial Arts teacher in the Connellsville, Meyersdale Area, and Somerset Area school districts, having taught Woodworking and Mechanical Drawing.  He was very proud of his students' accomplishments, and felt very fulfilled when former students became woodworkers themselves.  Bob was a track and field official, assistant basketball and football coach at Meyersdale and Somerset , and later served as Head Football coach at both schools. He was proud to serve as an assistant coach for the Pa. "Big 33" Football Classic in 1985.  He loved coaching and teaching the game of football to his players, and enjoyed keeping in touch with them through the years.   Another great joy for Mr. Brougher was serving as director of the Union Street and Cannell Drive playgrounds in Somerset from 1967-1977.  In addition to activity planning there, he coordinated the playground's evening high school basketball leagues.   Robert was a member of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Somerset, where he had served as usher, and member of Altar Guild, Christian Board of Education, and Church Council.  He was also a member of Epsilon Pi Tau honorary Industrial Arts Fraternity, American Legion Post 181, Meyersdale Elks Lodge #1951, Lodge 358 F & AM, and was a former active member of the Southern Alleghenies Football Coaches Association.  Bob was an accomplished woodworker and furniture maker and enjoyed sports.  He was devoted to his family, adored his grandchildren, and was an integral part of their lives.  Family thanks the staff of Richland Woods Assisted Living for their compassionate care of Robert.  Friends received 3-8 p.m. on Friday, March 24 at Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Somerset, and one hour prior to the Memorial Service to be held Saturday, March 25 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church, Somerset.  Rev. Linda J. McElroy Thomas officiating.  Interment Somerset Co. Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bob's honor to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, 1100 Liberty Ave. Suite #-201, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15222 or Trinity Ev.
